The city of music has a new attraction – for the first time selected performances will be broadcast live on a giant screen in front of the State Opera House. The new attraction for friends of the Vienna State Opera is called Oper live am Platz. Around 60 opera and ballet performances are being shown at a series of free open-air broadcasts on Herbert-von-Karajan-Platz next to the Opera House until end of this year. The performances are broadcast live on a 50 square meter LED video screen mounted on the side wall of the building.

Where applicable, all pieces include subtitles. Information about the piece, the performers, the Vienna State Opera and its work is provided 45 minutes before the concert starts and during the intervals. The season got underway with a broadcast of Jules Massenet's Werther on May 24, 2009. Live broadcast highlights in September include Giacomo Puccini's Manon Lescaut (September 4 and 12, 2009), Gioachino Rossini's Barber of Seville (September 6 and 9, 2009) and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Magic Flute (September 11 and 17, 2009). In October the billing features Giuseppe Verdi's Nabucco (October 3 and 10, 2009), Richard Wagner's Lohengrin (October 4, 2009) and Mozart's Marriage of Figaro (October 20, 25 and 29, 2009). Oper live am Platz is a new attraction initiated by the Vienna State Opera to celebrate its 140th anniversary. The building on Vienna's Ringstrasse boulevard was inaugurated on May 25, 1869.
