The Museum of Modern Art (MUMOK) in the MuseumsQuartier presents works from every creative period by this American painter, photographer, and visual artist. Born in 1928, this American artist diverged from abstract impressionism to create his own unique style, using writing-like signs that he enlarged to create monumental, large-format canvasses. His works focus on the ancient mythology of the Mediterranean, but emphasize random and underlying elements. This exhibition at the MUMOK is the first of Twombly's work in Austria, as well as his first retrospective. Alongside works from all of his creative periods, a new cycle of works that was specially created for the exhibition will be presented. The sculptures, paintings, drawings, photographs and graphic works will not be separated according to genre. Instead, they will be grouped to show their mutual influence and how they enrich one another. A German and English-language catalog will accompany the exhibition. |
