Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller (1793–1865) was one of the most important Austrian painters of the Biedermeier period, and ranked among the leading exponents of the main genres of the day — landscape, portraiture, genre and still life. His enthusiasm for realistic representations of nature, the expressiveness of his pictures and his outstanding technique earned him an international reputation. He was also far ahead of his time in his advocacy of the study of nature and plein air painting and his opposition to academic painting.

The Belvedere owns the world’s largest collection of pictures by Waldmüller, and is home to the Waldmüller archive. This comprehensive retrospective of around 120 exhibits includes the main works from the Belvedere’s own holdings, supplemented by loans from Austrian and international collections. The show is also the first opportunity to view some paintings that were long believed to have been lost.
